So far, the War on Terror has cost the American armed forces $12.5 billion. The Pentagon wants another $14 billion for the next six months and over $48 billion for next year. The 1991 Gulf War cost $60 billion, and the Vietnam war cost $30 in 1966, the first year of heavy combat for the US, and peaked at $146 billion in 1969 (all values in 2002 dollars). The non-military cost (to the economy and the government besides the Department of Defense) is said to be much higher, but coming up with an exact number is difficult (mainly because the impact of anti-terrorism measures is so broad.)
