  Outside of Grozny, a different kind of war is being fought. Russian troops using armored vehicles and helicopters surround and attack villages used by Chechen rebels as bases. Most of these attacks succeed. But the rebels also make use of the roads a constant risk, staging ambushes. Not all these attacks succeed, as the Russians treat each use of the roads as a combat operations. Thus the ambushed Russians are sometimes able to turn the tables on the rebels.
